Rick was my roommate from 1985-1987 at 104 Summer Street (since torn down) in Arlington, Massachusetts. Those were my first two years on staff with Cru.
He was the first "Harvard guy" that I ever met. The first thing that struck me and still remains with me is the fact that he never took himself too seriously (I love you for that Rick). The one picture I have in my photo boxes somewhere is Rick standing in profile with his shirt pulled up, his stomach protruded and his lips pursed. That is my enduring image of Rick (I love you for that Rick). We always got along very well. I imagine it would be difficult to not get along with Rick.
In preparation for today's memorial service, I reread a book I believe Rick introduced me to when it was published in 1986, “The Liberation of One" (Romuald Spasowski). It is the profound autobiography of the highest ranking defector from communist Poland. I commend it to all.
Rick's love for Russia and the Russian language was an anomaly for me. I had never encountered someone who took such an interest in a foreign country. I'm glad I share a similar passion with you now Rick. You would enjoy that, as a Turkophile, I have been working on the Turkish language for the last six years.
Rick, I look forward to reconnecting. I imagine I will understand your Russian and you will understand my Turkish.
Soozie and family, I know Jesus is living in you and walking with you. Jesus, thank you for your loving (and now complete) embrace of Rick.
Thank you for sharing these memories, Clyde! Rick cherished his friendship with you.
